Wow! Yesterday Do You Hear the People Sing? were delighted to welcome quadruple threat, Ben Goddard to lead a Performance Workshop. The choir spent the day exploring acting through song and raising their game. Ben led with expertise; nurturing and encouraging the group ensuring each choir member improved, grew and was challenged.
With anecdotes from Ben’s life and career which has included working for 20 years in the West End and on Broadway, Ben kept the group thoroughly entertained but most of all they learnt from every story he told.
The choir’s soloists were put through their paces and challenged to find their focus and intention and ensure that the thought behind the vocal was right. Ben shared that Stephen Sondheim had taught him that if the “thought was right, the sound would be right”. This was explored with Do You Hear the People Sing? and the results were a revelation!
The choir were encouraged to sing with one voice and support the soloists with the same thought process and emotion.
The day also included a Q & A time with Ben where the choir were able to ask advice on any aspect of performance, singing or even how to begin their careers. It was invaluable.
The day concluded with Ben reprising his most recent role of Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet. Ben originated the role in London to much critical acclaim and we were treated to his rendition of “Great Balls of Fire”. It was outstanding and as though we had Jerry Lee Lewis in the room with us.
Choir director Nicole Dawson truly believes in investing in the choir and broadening their horizons and expert, guidance from those currently working in the profession.
By the end of the day, the choir were exhausted, elated and equipped. With some very exciting projects on the horizon, it really feels that Do You Hear the People Sing? are now unstoppable!
